Man I dig your music. About that NYT article, I did go to music school. My life has been bliss in academia and playing concerts. Have more free time and ample bucks than 97% of other musicians. Advice: get your Doctorate (and go back in time when there were jobs). Still…. aim high. Go to music school. Then you can be musician / (anything you feel like whether it pays or not).
This is great-what a find. My 85-year old Dad (who was a music teacher but went into ‘property management’) sent me to the NYTimes Op/Ed piece about not going to music school. How timely! I am a 53-year old husband and bassoonist (my wife is a bassoonist also) and I am yet another one of those hypenated musician types like my father (I’m also a musician-landlord). The music on here is excellent; I played clarinet and bassoon with The Klezmorim for a few years (actually my dad did too but he never toured). It is definitely harder and harder to make a living with music-it seems its always been hard. When you are young and have all the energy in the world and can live cheap-it’s hard to think of yourself 30-35 years in the future with things like a mortgage, kids, bills. I’ve been very lucky after music school-but I could have done a lot better had I stayed in school to get a doctorate and played the game so many music educators do. Still-I wouldn’t change anything for the world. It is very hard these days knowing that music is expected to be free and something that just appears on your phone whenever you want it. Thanks again for some great stuff here.
Loved your op-ed piece.

To JSB:
I assume you’re referring to Jack’s music. You have good taste.
To Paul Hanson:
Jazz bassoon! Nice. I remember Rufus Harley on jazz bagpipes (around 1970).
To Judy Roth:
Hi, Judy!
Great video of YC and Jack…pre Vulpeck?
To Seth B. Marks:
Yes, pre-Vulfpeck. 2009.
